A tribute to around 80 veteran Olympic journalists who have covered at least ten editions of the Games. Hosted at the Teuli\u00e9 Military School and creatively directed by Andrea Camporesi, CEO & Creative Director of FREE EVENT, the ceremony celebrated decades of sports journalism and the values of Olympism, in the presence of IOC members, institutions, sports legends, and leading figures from the international media world.<\/h3>\n

On the eve of the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games<\/strong>, around 80 veteran Olympic journalists were honoured at the AIPS <\/strong>Journalists on the Podium<\/em><\/strong> event, held on Thursday, February 5 at the Teuli\u00e9 Military School in Milan, under the creative direction of Andrea Camporesi<\/strong>, CEO & Creative Director of FREE EVENT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

30 OLYMPIC GAMES<\/strong><\/h4>\n

With 30 Olympic Games (14 winter and 16 summer) coverage to his name, 84-year-old Italian photographer Giuliano Bevilacqua led the elite list of awardees who have covered 10 or more summer and winter Olympic Games, including Milano Cortina 2026. He is closely followed by 82-year-old Swiss journalist Hugo Steinegger with 29 and 76-year-old Frenchman Alain Lunzenfichter, who was absent at the ceremony due to unforeseen circumstances, with 28.<\/p>\n

These legendary journalists, who have dedicated decades to the advancement of sports journalism and Olympism through their tireless work across various forms of media, received certificates, copies of Michael Payne\u2019s autobiography \u201cFast Tracks and Dark Deals\u201d<\/em>, elegant boxes of creativity-driven candies from Amos Sweets, the main sponsors of the event, and neck warmers from Pelliot. All attendees also received neck warmers as well as Amos Sweets candy.<\/p>\n

SPECIAL GUESTS
\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Sports legends, Olympic champions and IOC members were among the dignitaries who took on the role of presenting the awards to the journalists.<\/p>\n

The special guests in attendance included Col. Antonio Calligaris<\/strong>, commander of the Teuli\u00e9 Military School<\/strong>, Ma Enduo<\/strong>, founder and chairman of Amos Sweets<\/strong>, Federica Picchi<\/strong>, Lombardy Region\u2019s Secretary for Sports<\/strong>, Marco Riva<\/strong>, president of CONI Lombardia<\/strong>, Ruiqi Liu<\/strong>, chairman of the board of HYX Group and Michael Payne<\/strong>, former IOC Head of Marketing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The IOC members who joined the ceremony were vice-president Nawal Moutawakel, Paul Tergat, Morinari Watanabe and honorary member Manuela Di Centa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ITALIAN SPORTS LEGENDS
\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Alongside Di Centa, other Italian sports legends present were Alberto Tomba, Claudia Giordani and Maria Rosa Quario<\/strong>, Federica Brignone<\/strong>‘s mother, who is also a journalist and has covered 10 Olympic Winter Games. The aforesaid protagonists featured in interview sessions during which they reflected on their careers and shared their expectations for the Milano 2026 Games.<\/p>\n

SWEET MESSENGER
\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Federica Picchi, Lombardy Region\u2019s Secretary for Sports, said: \u201cFor me this is a great example of values, of a complete education\u2026 You guys have the responsibility of telling great stories. And thanks to you, we can see all the wins, all the feats, all the narratives that transfer great values to the younger generation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In his speech, Marco Riva, president of CONI Lombardia, also highlighted the important role of journalists in the sports ecosystem, and Gianfranco Coppola, president of the Italian Sports Press Association (USSI) mentioned that USSI (co-organisers of this year\u2019s Journalists on the Podium) will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year.<\/p>\n

Invited on stage by\u00a0Sky TG24\u2019s Valentina Clemente<\/strong>, host of the event, AIPS president Gianni Merlo<\/strong>, who has covered 27 Olympic Games, presented the activities and projects that the International Sports Press Association has accomplished in recent years, especially the AIPS Centenary Celebration which took place during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

IOC vice president\u00a0Nawal El Moutawakel,\u00a0a pioneer of women’s sport, stated: \u201cIt is fantastic to share the stage with Gianni, who was elected AIPS president in my country, Morocco, 21 years after my participation in Los Angeles 1984. I heartily thank the journalists for the passion and emotion with which they report on the performances of the champions and athletes.\u201d
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

JOURNALISTS ON THE PODIUM
\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The first edition of the AIPS Journalists on the Podium<\/em> took place at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games with more than 100 Olympic journalists awarded Honav\u2019s replica of the London 2012 Olympic torch. Since then this unique tradition has left a positive and beneficial impact on many other single-sport and multi-sport events.<\/p>\n

Paris 2024 marked the return of the Journalists on the Podium<\/em> to the Olympics after a pandemic hiatus, with more than 100 journalists recognised at the UNESCO headquarters during the AIPS Centennial Celebration. This is the sixth time the event is taking place at the Olympics after London 2012 (Summer), Sochi 2014 (Winter), Rio 2016 (Summer), Pyeongchang 2018 (Winter) and Paris 2024 (Summer).
